CHIPPENDALE SHOWING CHINESE INFLUENCE period. The bandyleg of the Dutch and Queen Anne period isretained, and the claw and ball feet are preserved, though beauti-fied with rococo carving. Sometimes the arms arc decoratedwith lionsor goats heads. The ribband back chair is re-garded as his best work. He saw everything with a carvers eye.and little gilding or japanning was done by him. His beds arefrequently full of pagoda tops, sunk Gothic panels and rib-band effects, but no matter how mi.xed the styles, his gracefuloutlines carried them through. His wall decoration possessedmuch originality. To the broken scroll and shell work of theRococo Period he added long-beaked birds, dripping waters, Chi-nese figures, pagodas and whole scenes from .Msops Fables.He took the Queen Anne chair and kept what was graceful inits lines and curves and added designs inspired by other schools,producing a homogeneous and beautiful whole.
