December. A fine exhibition variety, chiefly valued for itsgreat size, but the quality is also good. Tree spreading,dwarf and open as a bush on the Paradise; strong stan-dards can also be had on the Crab. Fruit large to verylarge, round or somewhat flattened, even, yellow withabundant red streaks, very handsome, acid and juicy. Potts Seedling.—Culinary. August-October. A freecropper of considerable merit for gardens or market.Tree forms an excellent bush or pyramid of mediumgrowth on the Paradise, and is healthy and free andextremely prolific; also forms a good standard with well-developed heads and a stout stem. Fruit medium tolarge, round or slightly conical, green, becoming yellowwhen ripe. Excellent for cooking. Med Astrachan.—Dessert. August-September. Chieflyuseful for its prolific vigorous habit and hardiness. Goodfor market purposes. Tree strong, erect, much branched,forming a bush quickly on a good stock. On the Paradiseit is much smaller, but bears earlier. Fruit medium,

Hardy, prolific, and useful for gardens ormarket. Tree of strong free open growth; succeeds onboth classes of stocks, but is more prolific on the Paradise.Fruit large, rather conical, yellow with a little russet,finely flavoured and juicv. THE APPLE. 91 Rhode Island Greening.—Dessert and culinary, No-vember-April. Of American origin, but it thrives satis-factorily in Great Britain. Tree of strong growth andwell fitted for the Free stocks, but useful trees can alsobe had on the Paradise. Fruit large, round, green,flavour very rich when at its best. Ribston Pippin.—Dessert. December. An excellentold variety of the highest quality, but much subject tocanker and often worthless in wet cold soils. Growthlax and spreading on the Paradise, but much moreprolific and healthy as a bush on this stock than onthe Crab, though larger
