causes of this are various. The trees may beweakened and predisposed to attacks by theexcessive use of stimulating manures, by over-cropping, or by poor cultivation. Careful selec-tion of sites, planting only healthy young trees,and good cultivation are the best preventives.Still, even where these are provided, atmos-pheric and other conditions may prevail whichfavour the development and increase of bothinsects and fungi, and organized methods ofprevention or cure become necessary. Theadoption of such means is now compulsory insome countries; the careless cultivator whoallows his trees to become infested without aneffort to check the evil is regarded as a sourceof public danger, and is dealt with accordingly.Important assistance has been rendered tocultivators by the invention of improved ap-paratus for the distribution of liquid substancesover trees and plants.
