The 184 The Northern Pacific Railroad. canon forms the tortuous passage of a silvery stream through a series ofgates cut in very high walls. These gates are so narrow that a man can*span their width with extended arms. The walls are only a few feet inthickness, but of a surprising height. On each side of the main gorgeare smooth fissures, called Devils Slides, and every nook is filled withbright mosses and lichens. Two miles beyond the crossing of the Missouri River the railroadpasses through the mining town of Bedford, which was established in 1864.Much placer mining is still carried on in the vicinity, and the country formiles and miles around is covered with enormous piles of stones and earth,the. debris of the diggings. The road follows down the valley of the Mis-souri, past one or two old and thrifty settlements, to Helena, twenty milesbeyond.

Helena—(239 miles from Billings; population, 7,000.)—This is the ter-minus of the Montana Division, and the beginning of the Rocky MountainDivision of the railroad. Helena, the capital of Montana, is pleasantly sit-uated at the eastern foot of the main chain of the Rocky Mountains, in latitude46° 30 N., and longitude 112° 4 west of Greenwich, on both sides of thefamous Last Chance Gulch, from which at least ten millions of dollars worthof nuggets and gold dust have been taken, and which still yields annually aconsiderable amount of the precious metal. So large was the influx of minersat this point in 1864, that the United States Government felt compelled to es-tablish a post-office for their accommodation. Until then the camp had beenknown as Crab Town, but a meeting was called for the purpose of selectingabetter name, and the majority of those assembled decided upon christeni
