childhood days. They are marred and ruined, andmany of them have been ruthlessly wasted. Late in the afternoon, we were walking slowly alongthe trail when the Indian guide pointed to a very largepanther standing near, watching very demurely andwithout any signs of fear or anger. He never moved, but kept turning his gaze in our direction as we fol-lowed the winding path out of sight. These were caused by the steady drip of waterseeping through the ceiling for long years and years. There was a moisture on the walls of the entire cave. The next morning, we were awakened by a roaringnoise. Upon investigation, we found that our cave wasthe daylight home of thousands of bats. We hurriedlyate our breakfast and departed. The fourth days journey was the most difficult ofall, because it led over mountains. We made only tenmiles that day. However, the trip was very interestingto all the members of the party except, perhaps,
