From the Feast of the Ascension toWhitsunday was one prolonged festival.On the 6th of June, Pius IX. preachedhimself, in the Sistine Chapel, in Latinand French, to an audience of four thou-sand priests, all that the building couldhold. When he had <nven the Pontificalblessing, a priest exclaimed, in the wordsof the Litany, Or emus pro Pontifice nos-tra Pio Let us pray for our Pontiff,Pius. The response rose from all, asfrom one: The Lord preserve him, andgive him life, and make him blessed uponearth, and deliver him not to the will ofhis enemies. TheHoly Father appeared preceded by thebanners of the saints to be canonized,bishops, archbishops, patriarchs, and cardi-nals.
