Pennant obferving the difference between the ef-fential characters of the two latter tribes, and that of the WaterRail, conftitutes a new genus of our fpecies. The Water Rail isdiftinguifhed by its (lender, comprefTed and incurvated bill. TheCrake (Gallinule) by the bafe of the upper mandible reaching farupon the forehead, and being membranaceous: the bill is alio thickat the bafe, and Hoping to the point. The PLATE CIV. The length of the Water Rail is twelve inches, breadth fixteeninches, weight four ounces. It frequents the rufhy and fhelteredfides of rivulets and ponds, among which it can conceal itfelf fromdanger. It is a very fhy bird. Flies indifferently, but walks withgreat celerity, and has been feen to run on the furface of the waterwhen there has been any weeds to bear it up #.
