Lay from twelveto fifteen eggs, fmaller than thofe of the hen, and of a paler colourthan thofe of the Partridge. The young follow the females likeChickens. Several authors have noticed a circumftance of this bird, whichfurpriling as it may appear, is by no means peculiar to the Pheafant * Colonel Davies has a drawing of the tail feather of one of the Chinefe fpecies ofPheafants, which is fix feet in length. A 3 only. PLATE CI. only. After the hen has done laying and fetting, the plumage of thefemale becomes like that of the male, and fhe is then entirely neg-lected by him. Salerne, Edwards, and others, have mentioned thisof the Fheafant, Guinea Hen, Rock Manakin, &c. and Mr. J.Ranter had a paper in the Philofophical Transactions on that fubject.Latham obferves, that it does not always require mature age to givethe hen Fheafant the appearance of the male.
