Lay from twelveto fifteen eggs, fmaller than thofe of the hen, and of a paler colourthan thofe of the Partridge. The young follow the females likeChickens. Several authors have noticed a circumftance of this bird, whichfurpriling as it may appear, is by no means peculiar to the Pheafant * Colonel Davies has a drawing of the tail feather of one of the Chinefe fpecies ofPheafants, which is fix feet in length. Salerne, Edwards, and others, have mentioned thisof the Fheafant, Guinea Hen, Rock Manakin, &c. and Mr. J.Ranter had a paper in the Philofophical Transactions on that fubject.Latham obferves, that it does not always require mature age to givethe hen Fheafant the appearance of the male.
