f the gravelly character of the entire plain, thereare many large patches and strips where a rich soil has beendeposited. This is especially true of the upper end of thevalley, and the people near Rathdrum are raising good vege-tables and other crops. Spokane Falls (1,537 miles from St. Paul; population,25,000).—This is the first point of importance reached inWashington. It has, in some remarkable respects, more claimsto consideration than any other place east of the Cascades.Its situation—upon the gravelly plains just above where Hang-mans creek joins the Spokane river—is very beautiful, look-ing out upon the hills, with the grand, roaring water-fall in itsmidst. Spokane Falls is the oldest town in northeasternWashington, the only one that preceded the railroad. Enter-prising men were early attracted to the place, not alone by itsnatural beauty, but also by the wonderful water-power, so easyof control, and so abundant. The educational facilities of the town are remarkably good.

The Northern Pacific Railroad, It has a large public school building; the Spokane MethodistEpiscopal College, which occupies a handsome building on thenorth bank of the river; a Roman Catholic College, having alarge new brick building, and being for the north Pacificcoast what the Santa Clara College is for California; and alsoa number of private schools. There are eight churches. Themilling and manufacturing establishments include three flouringmills, the largest of which has a building six stories high, witha capacity of 800 bushels per day; a saw mill, a sash, door andblind works, a planing mill, fence works, carriage works, anoatmeal mill, a pottery, and a bottling establishment. Thepress is represented by two daily and six weekly newspapers.The river is crossed by bridges. There are water-works, withthe Holly system of supply from the Spokane river, electriclight employing the water-power, three street railways, a cableroad, and a stearn-motor road.
