There is a fine view of the Cascades from thetrain, and of the mountains on the north. At railroad speed theLower Cascades are soon passed, and Bonneville, the point atwhich the steamboats on the lower river make their landing, isreached. The Old Block House.—Near the Upper Cascades, on theWashington side of the river, on a point of land that juts outso as to make a good defensive position, there is still standingan old block house, built thirty years ago, when the Indianswere more numerous than peaceable. War broke out all alongthe coast, from British Columbia to California, in 1855. TheIndians had some sort of unison, and outbreaks were almostsimultaneous for that distance of 800 miles, though some of themore powerful tribes refused to join the alliance, and gave noticeof danger. Along the Columbia River, 305 as the portage where all thhigs bound up the river had to makea transit. Suddenly the outbreak came. The block housebecame the refuge of all the settlers, who were defended by themale population, and by a handful of soldiers, stationed there atthe time under command of a young Lieutenant named Sheridan.So the legend of the Indian and the wonders of nature are sup-plemented by a bit of history that has for its heroic characterthe now famous Gen. Phil. Sheridan, who was a favorite in thecountry thirty years ago. A little way below the Cascades, on the south side, there is acanning establishment. Travelers feel much curiosity concern-ing great wheels that float on the tide and revolve with thecr.rrent. These are a cruel invention for taking fish. As theyget into the rapids, the salmon swim near the shore, and thesewheels are placed in their v/ay, and take them bodily up withoutregard to size, landing them in great tanks for the use of thecannery.
