Ill style is not surprising whenwe remember that masonry encased inwooden timbering is already illustratedby the Early Minoan buildings ofVasiliki. But the architectural formsdisplayed by the House Tablets reallyrepresent the traditions of the earlierpart of the Middle Minoan Age. Theycannot as a whole be taken to reflectthe architectural fashions that emergeto view in the existing remains of theDomestic Quarter, which indeed werelargely taken over by the Late Minoanbuilders. The Town Mosaic must inshort be placed in the same M. M. Hicontext as the Terra-cotta Shrine.In spite, however, of their early date and archaic tradition the effectproduced by the fagades of these Minoan town-houses is on the wholesurprisingly modern. Though in some cases details of the restoration arenecessarily conjectural, the general accuracy of their presentment, as seenin Fig. 226, can hardly be contested.
