Cyrus Butler added a gift of $40,0C0, and re-ceived the honor of having his name attachedto the Hospital when it was incorporated.The Institution dates from 1847, and hasnow a fund of $85,000. The farm embraces140 acres, on the high bank of the See-konk river, on the east margin of the city,south of Swan Point Cemetery. The build-ings are in the middle of this undulating,well-wooded, fertile tract. The Grotto inthe grounds, with its purling brook andrustic bridge, is a spot of great beauty. Herethe insane have great advantages and thebest of treatment. The first superintendentwas Dr. Isaac Ray. He was succeeded byDr. John W. Sawyer. The Rhode Island Hospital is a revelationof the heart of the State. This beneficentinstitution was planted and is conducted ona broad and grand scale. It was commencedby gifts from Mr. Robert H. Ives and others

To thiswere added handsome subscrij)tions fromwealthy and public-spirited men and womenin the city and other parts of the State. Thebuildings, located on Eddy street, betweenLockwood and Dudley streets, were o^jenedin 1868. For the maintenance of free bedsa fund has been raised of about $150,000.The cut we herewith present will indicatethe nobility of the institution. Here areprovided the services of the best of physi-cians and surgeons. The Home for Aged Women is a beau-tiful Christian institution. Benevolence,which has a true home in Providence, hasopened veritable homes for the indigent, orthose who are left alone. The Home forAged Women, originated by the agency ofMrs. Eliza Rogers, and seconded by Drs.Wayland, Hall and others, is now a capa-cious, well furnished, fourstoried, brick house, erectedfor this purpose on the corner-of East and Front streets, nearthe old Tockwotten House.It was opened Nov. 30, 186
