The sailors on few of the Federal vessels had a morevaried and adventurous experience of the war than did those of the Wissahickon, and the faces in the picture, both old and young,are those of men ready at any and all times for a fight or a frolic on their beloved ship.

She was one of the fourfighting-shijis the construction of which, under Act of Congress of March 27, 1704, marked the l>irth of anadequate navy to i)rotect the commerce of the young repubhc. Slie was tlie third to be launched, October21, 1797, at Boston. Her exploits in the harbor of Tripoli in 1804 and her great fight with the Guerriere soon made her name a household word to all Americans.
