, what is meant bya coefficient of correlation. Coefficients of correlation aremeasures of resemblance between quantities found coexistingunder varying conditions. There may be complete correspondence, + 1.00, (the + sign is omitted in this study) or the exactopposite, -1.00. Usually, however, the measures secured containerrors and a correlation of 1.00, positive (or negative), is al-most never obtained. A coefficient of .60 or more, in thisstudy, indicates a high degree of correspondence and becomesquite significant. 44. Table 33 Correlation Between Education of Fathers and Education of Mpthere. 46; RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN1, Fathers and Sons. The curve (Figure XV) of this relationship looks as if some factor such as the compulsory educationlaw had modified its general character. At any rate the coeffi-cient of correlation is low, being .47*.03. 3. Mothers and Daughters. This relationship is much higherthat that between fathers and sons and the curve (Figure XVI);lacks the flattened appearance at the lower end which character-izes the other. This may be due to the tendency of girls to stayin school longer than boys or it may be a mere chance variation. The coefficient of correlation is .60^.03 (Table 35).
