WILLIAM CECIL, LORD BURLEIGH Lady Katherine the Centre of Intrigues his characteristic acuteness, took good care todo nothing that might compromise him further.Lord John Grey was not so fortunate, though it isdifficult to see what he had to do with the affair;but all the same he received a warning, and waskept under arrest at Pirgo until his death. Itmay be that, apart from the abortive Spanishplot for the abduction of Lady Katherine, someother conspiracy was on foot to place her on theThrone, and that Lord John Grey was cognizantof this scheme. Really the Greys motto mightwell have been ** Save me from my friends,for their worst enemies were their most eagersupporters—Lady Janes execution was the im-mediate result of her fathers insurrection; andHaless attempt to vindicate Lady Katherineshonour, only served to increase Elizabeths angeragainst her and hers.
