There were en-gaged in this hunt from one to two thousand In-dians, some mounted and some on foot. Theyencompass a large space where the buffalo are con-tained, and closing in around them on all points,form a complete circle. Their circle, as first en-closed, may measure perhaps six miles in diameterwith an irregular circumference determined by themovements of the herd. When the surround isformed, the hunters radiate from the main body tothe right and left until the ring is entire. Thechief then gives the order to charge, which is com-municated along the ring with the speed of light-ning. Every man then rushes to the center, andthe work of destruction is begun. . . .
