A five- or six-knife machine is capable ofchaffing the straw into half-inch lengths as fastas it falls direct from an ordinary threshingmachine ; and over a large portion of the coun-try the two operations of threshing and chaffing by one ordinary steam engine are commonlyperformed. Riddles of various gaugestake off coarse mater, ials and sift out heavy dirt, and many machines are fitted with blasts oraspirators to clear out dust, so that a perfectlyclean chaff is made. The chaff is convenientlybagged by being carried up by elevator to asuitable height for the sacks to be suspendedto receive it; or tu
