this long period, debated,and in many cases decided. But in .1859 ^^^north wing of the Capitol was so far completed thatthe Senate removed thither, and the next year theSupreme Court, which had before held its sessionsin the room below, was brought here. We will suppose the day of our first visit to bethe second Monday of October, and the hour fiveminutes before twelve. We shall find in attendanceat the door an elderly colored man, faultlessly cladin immaculate linen and black broadcloth, who, ifthere are ladies in the party, motions us to seats onthe right, but to the left if there are none. Themeeting edges of the two-leaved door are lined withrubber, to prevent the slightest sound from the im-pact. Promptly at twelve oclock a procession ofnine elderly, dignified gentlemen, in black silk robes,issues from the robing-room. At the same momentthe marshal requests all present to rise, and thenmakes the announcement: The Honorable, theChief Justice, and Associate Justices of the Supreme
