Commissioner of Labor, who collects information onthe subject of labor, its relation to capital, the hoursof labor, etc. ; and a Superintendent of the Census,who supervises the taking of each census of theUnited States. The Post-Oiifice Department is lodged in anotherof those white marble buildings of Grecian architec-ture, so popular with American architects a halfcentury ago, which occupies the effitire squarebounded by Seventh, Eighth, E, and F Streets.It was erected in 1839 ^Ioni designs by RobertMills, and extensions were added in 1855, afterdesigns of Thomas U. Walter, the total cost amount-ing to two millions of dollars. The Postmaster-General has charge of the mailservice of the United States. His subordinates com-prise three Assistant Postmasters-General, a Superin-tendent of Foreign Mails, of the Money-Order System,and of the Dead-Letter OfBce.
