The Post-Oiifice Department is lodged in anotherof those white marble buildings of Grecian architec-ture, so popular with American architects a halfcentury ago, which occupies the effitire squarebounded by Seventh, Eighth, E, and F Streets.It was erected in 1839 ^Ioni designs by RobertMills, and extensions were added in 1855, afterdesigns of Thomas U. Walter, the total cost amount-ing to two millions of dollars. The Postmaster-General has charge of the mailservice of the United States.
