at the old Washington tavernthere, and in its wide, bare ordinary partake of cakesand ale, is very much like being transported back toWashingtons day. In another quarter, the south-eastern, a pleasant drive from the hotels or WhiteHouse, lie the Arsenal and the Navy Yard. Thelatter was established in 1799, and contains two shiphouses and nearly all the workshops necessary forthe construction of a sailing vessel. For many yearsit was a scene of great activity, many of the finestvessels of the navy in early days having been con-structed there. At present little but repairing isdone. There is a museum which contains a collec-tion of old cannon and munitions of war of morethan ordinary interest,—the Spanish cannon, forinstance, cast in 1490, and used by Cortez in theconquest of Peru ; a mortar captured from Corn- 5-UB URBA N IVA SHING TOiV. 359 wallis, and many relics of the late war. JOAQUIN millers LOG CABIN ON MERIDIAN HILL. junction of this branch with the Potomac, are thebeautiful grounds of the Arsenal, a grisly spot forall its beauty, for here stood the old penitentiary in 360 THE STORY OF WASHINGTON. which the trials of the assassins of President Lincolnand Secretary Seward were held, and in the yard ofwhich they were hanged and buried. The assassinBooth is said to have been buried for a time beneathone of its cells. There is no hint of those terribledays in the rich greensward and nicely kept walksand drives of to-day, although the conical heaps ofcannon-balls and black-throated columbiads lookingout upon the river remind one of the times whenwar seemed the citys normal condition.
