perintendent of the South Chicago CityRailway, has adopted the plan of having the inspectors thattravel on the road regulate the electric heaters on the variouscars. That is, the controlling switch which changes the con-nections of the heaters so as to give varying degrees of heatis locked Up so as to be accessible only to the inspectors. There are two reasons for this practice. One is that theconductors are liable to be poor judges of what is the righttemperature for a car, or often careless about seeing that theright temperature is maintained. The other reason is, thatin turning the ordinary heater controller switch a conductorwith little knowledge of electricity or the knack of breakingarcs, is liable to turn the switch so as to draw an arc that willruin it. Consequently the control of these switches is putentirely in the hands of the inspectors. The Imperial Tramways Company, of Stockton, Eng.,has applied to the Board of Trade for Parliamentary sanc-tion to build a trolley road. It is proposed to make thegauge 3 feet, 6 inches, in order to offer as little obstructionas possible in narrow streets.
