MT. TOM RAILROAD. Tom Railroad Company, but this company has the sameofficers and, with one exception, the same directors as theformer, and the road will be leased to the Holyoke StreetRailway. The Mt. Tom company also has 365 acres inpark. The Holyoke company operates electric cars fromthe city to Mountain Park, as it is called, where connectionis made with the incline. Electric cars from Springfieldand the smaller towns in the contiguous territory make goodconnections with the Holyoke line. The road is operated on the balance system, but with two of steel, I i^ in. in diameter, composed of 6 strands of 20wires each; at the top it passes over an S-ft. sheave. Tele-phone wires connect with telephones in both cars in orderthat the motorman may operate them in unison. The twocars are named Rowland Thomas and Elizur Holyoke,after the commanders of two surveying parties which tra-dition says made surveys of the mountain about 1650.
