The two ends of this band are fastened to a togglejoint connected to a 45-lb. armature of an electro magnet. The coils of this magnet consist of 400 turns of No. 7 B.& S. wire in series with the armature of the motor. Whenthe current is turned on for hoisting purposes the armatureof the electro-magnet is drawn up over a 1 )/i-m. air gap andthe band around the brake pulley is loosened.
