Text Appearing Before Image:
ter carried beneath the car floor. Theline atNiagara has worked successfully. got accumulator traction, which does not seem to pay, andBlackpool has a conduit system laid in the ground, whichsuffers, or used to suffer, from periodical inundation. Thetwo electric railways in England—those in Liverpool and theCity of London—are giving unbounded satisfaction; so muchso, that the former has been taken over from the contractorslong before the expiration of the guarantee, and is alreadyundergoing extension. The fact that the trolley has gained its entrance intoNew York is the only mistake of the Gazette, but thespirit of the paragraph is right for progress. No rapidtransit item has ever produced the comment of the Eng-lish press to such an extent as the Metropolitan offer, andwe hope that English genius may add its quota to thesum of experience to be gained by the competition. The Chicago General Street Railway is putting in asmall steam plant to charge the storage battery on its lines.
Text Appearing After Image:
A LIGHT FROM LONDON. PENNSYLVANIA TRACTION COMPANY. That the most conservative press in the world shouldchampion the trolley may be a surprise to many of ourAmerican howlers. Here is an extract from the PallMall Gazette, London: The Metropolitan Tramways Company, of New York, having made the generous offer of a X 10,000 prize to any onewho will produce by March, a working system of tractionpossessing all the advantages and none of the disadvantagesof the overhead wire or trolley system, it remains to be seenwhat the scientific world can produce. It is rather forcingthe growth, this artificial stimulus, for the trolley is a veryremarkable development from the system of a few years agoand civilzation can well afford to pause at it. We may cometo balloons in time, but meanwhile the trolley which hasbeen stifled in New York by the blind and utterly unreasoningopposition of the press, is doing a work in all the other greatcities of America which we over here may well envy.
