The detailof the signal box is shown in Figure 2. The main trolleycurrent flows around a solenoid of low resistance. Theplunger of this solenoid operates the disc or shutterwhich discloses the lights at night, and by its color givesthe day signals. The simplest way is to have these sig-nal lights permanently in circuit. The most economicalway is to have them cut in automatically, as shown here.This method has only one lamp circuit for the two signals.It would be simpler, of course, to have each bank of sig-nal lamps independent, as then no wires other than thetrolley and feed wires would be needed between theboxes, for the lamp circuit could be grounded at each box.The shutter is held to safety by a counterweight.
