p Railroad in 1834. PRIZES AT GRAND RAPIDS. The Consolidated Street Railway Company of GrandRapids, Mich., on February I3, awarded the prizes for goodconduct during the last six months. Twelve men receivedawards ranging from $40 and one weeks vacation with fullpay to four days vacation with full pay. At the sametime the management thanked the men for the excellentrecords made, antl regretted that all those whose conducthad been good could not also receive an award. Duringthe past year the number of accidents has been greatlyreduced. Buenos Ayres is the largest city in the Western Hemis-))herc outside of the United States, and the most progres-sive in the .South American republics. Its street car serviceis operated by animal power but it is ipiite extensive. Thereare 10 companies in the city running 491 cars on 231.5 Wlesof track. In the construction of every factory chimney it is neces-sary, owing to a concentration of so great a weight on acomparatively small area and on account of its lofty natureas a structure, that a careful examination of the ground bymeans of proper sounding rods be made ; it is of considerableimportance to ascertain whether any layers of quicksandintersected with a watercourse may not be concealed in alower stratum, which would necessitate special considerationand a more careful and elaborate operation in order to securea good and permanent foundation. It is of no rare occurrencethat an apparently solid bed of clay may be of a limitedthickness only, overlaying quicksand, or a bed of a differentnature of clay that will not sustain the great weight whichwill have to rest upon it.
