We are fortunate in being able to present to ourreaders, this month, an engraving of the remarkable bronze wheel claims a record of 1,000 miles and is stillrunning on its patent graphite bearings. TOWER BRIDGE, LONDON. Tower Bridge, London, England, recently opened byWales and approved by his royal mamma. The bridge is of the bascule type, with two leaves,each weighing 1,000 tons, and the time occupied foropening or closing is two minutes. It will be noticedthat at the top of the towers is a connecting foot bridgefor pedestrians, and inside the towers run two elevatorsfor the convenience of bridged walkers. The leavesare raised and lowered hydraulically, and a 360-horse-power steam plant is required in the operation.
