He can reach there in an hour or less, and POWER HOUSE OF THE MARKET STREETRAILWAY, SAN FRANCISCO. The Market Street Railway Company of San Franciscooperates by far the largest system in the far west. Itincludes twelve transportation companies, which were con-solidated under one management in 1893. At the presenttime the system comprises 190 miles of track, of which 26.9are operated by horses, 60.5 by cable, 19.7 by steam and83.9 by electricity. Prior to 1894 0e of the lines wereelectrically operated; the work of changing the motivepower began on the Metropolitan in that year and has beenextended to the other lines as rapidly as circumstanceswould permit, until now over ;o per cent of tlie total mile-age is operated by electricity.
