dconnected on the cantilever principle that a load appliedat any one of the points of support is felt equally by the THE SARGENT SHOE. Modeled after the M. C. B. Association pattern, theSargent Company, formerly the Congdon Brake ShoeCompany, of Chicago, has produced the Standard brakeshoe and head for street railway service The standardmeasurements for the head are determined for the facewhich fits the shoe alone, as the back must be made to fitany particular kind of beam used by the railway. Themeasurements are almost identical with the standardadopted by the Master Car Builders Association afterlong study. The advantage of standard measurement tothe store keeper and to the repair shop are so obviousthat no mention of it need be made here. The spring base is ample to properly support thecar body, being 13 feet for a 6j4 foot wheel base. Tohold up the ends of long open cars the truck is built toreceive a set of braces which are not shown in theengraving. The frame is strong and simple. The sideframes are continuous and straight. The latter featurewill be appreciated by those who are familiar with someforms of built up frames. No gray iron casting entersinto the construction of the frame, it being composedentirely of steel, wrought iron and malleable iron. Thebrakes are very powerful, with wrought iron beams andlevers, and the breaking of hangers will not let the partsdrop on the track nor hinder its working. The failureof one of the chains or either of the connecting rods dis-ables the apparatus only so far that it can be appliedfrom
