y, of New Haven,Conn. They measure 72 inches by 16 feet, and contain 544 ^i?icctl)f\ailM^lf^yl^ g6 four-inch tubes each. Each boiler is rated at 150horse-power. Besides this equipment, there has beenrecently added a big Manning vertical boiler, which stands27 feet high. It holds 284 two and a half-inch tubes 15foot long. The fire box is 84 inches in diameter and 48inches deep. This boiler is rated at 250 horse-power. THE ENGINE ROOM In the engine room are two 20 by 40-inch C. & G.Cooper Corliss engines, running at 88 revolutions per was done away with, and the faithful Coopers coupleddirect, as will be related, and a direct coupled unit wasresolved upon. It fell to the engineer and Superintendent Hurt toremodel the plant without shutting down, and the Cooperengines were retained, doing as good work as ever, andanother unit installed between them, of a heavier type.To do this the plant had to be kept running regularly atthe same time. From the start they have done splendid service,and still are doing yeoman work. They are nowcoupled direct to 300-kilowatt Westinghouse machines,but formerly ran seven D 62 Thomson-Houston gen-erators, driving a 40-foot counter shaft by means of Mun-son belting. The service of the engines was in everyparticular satisfactory, but increased demands on thestation called for further power, and the counter shafting tipolar was installed just in line with the receivingpulley on the shaft. This generator was wired upand finished, and, after shutting-down time at night, thebelt was transferred from the shafting to the new gen-erator. The new machine and the three old ones still lefton the shaft pulled the load until another 300 kilo-watt machine was installed at the other end of the shaft,and, belted direct to the other C
