Among thespecialties are commutators, drop forged copper segments,armature windings, trolley wheels, bearings, sand boxes,fuse boxes, switches, brake and controller handles and cartrimmings. A FINE PIECE OF SPECIAL WORK. The accompanying illustration shows a pieceof special track work recently made for theConey Island & Brooklyn Railroad Companyby the New York Switch & Crossing Com-pany of Hoboken, N. J.; it is located at the in-tersection of Smith and 9th streets in Brooklyn. There are double tracks in both streetswhich cross at an angle of 73°, and are joinedby curves across one of the obtuse angles.The rails throughout are 9-in. girders. Thefrog centers and switch throats are of hardenedsteel. I The chrome steel used for this purpose isthe best wearing steel known. The fished joints are indi-cated in the drawing by the solid circles. The four whichare marked by double circles are 6-bolt joints 20 in. long. The method of constructing the work with steel centersis to place the centers and the ends of the rails in sand andpour molten cast iron around them which forms the binderand enables the most complicated pieces of work to bemade without bolts.
