Threedistinct beats, at slow intervals, rangthrough the apparently deserted town, andechoed loudly from the neighboring moun-tain. It was the signal! A few minuteselapsed, and, like a distant echo frcm thenorth, the three mournful notes again dis-tinctly sounded. Was it an echo? Impos-sible! Now from the south, far distant, but un-mistakable, the same three regular beatscame booming through the still night air.Again and again from every quarter, spread-ing far and wide, the signal was respondedto, and the whole country echoed thesethree solemn notes so full of warning. Oncemore the great nogara of Tarrangollesounded the original alarm within a fewhundred paces of our quarters. The wholecountry was up. There was no doubtabout the matter. Instead of theintense stillness, that had formerly beenalmost painful, a distinct hum of voices be-tokened the gathering of large bodies of men.However, we were well fortified, and theLatookas knew it. We occupied the verystrongliold which they themselves had con-structed for the defence of their town; andthe square, being surrounded with strongiron-wood palisades, with only a narrowentrance, would be impregnable when held,as now, by fifty men well armed against amob whose best weapons were only lances. ■ I sent men up the watchmens stations.These were about twenty-five feet high;and, the night being clear, they could dis-tinctly report the movements of a large massof natives that were
