the face of the earth who carryit out so fully as do the Marquesans, everypart of their bodies, even to the crown ofthe head and the fingers and toes, beingcovered with the pattern. The Tattooedchiefs on the opposite page illustrate theextent to which the Marquesans carry thiscustom. This extreme elaboration is only tobe found in the men, the women contentingthemselves with a bracelet or two tattooedon their arms, and a few similar ornamentshere and there. A very interesting de-scription of the tattooing of the Marquesansis given in Langsdorft s Travels. — Sometimes a rich islander will, eitherfrom generosity, ostentation, or love to hiswife, make a feast in honor of her when shehas a bracelet tattooed round her arm, orperhaps her ear ornamented. A hog is thenkilled, and the friends of both sexes are in-vited to partake of it, the occasion of thefeast being made known to them. It is ex-pected that the same courtesy should be re-turned in case of the wife of any of the guests (1044)

If, in a very dry year, bread-fruit, hogs,roots, and other provisions, become scarce,any one who has a good stock of them (whichcommonly happens to the chief), in order todistribute the stores, keeps open table fora certain time to an appointed number ofpoor artists, who are bound to give in returnsome strokes of the tattoo to all who chooseto come for it. By virtue of a tapu, all thesebrethren are engaged to support each other,if in future some happen to be in need whilethe others are in affluence. The same person may be a member ofseveral of these societies; but, according towhat we could learn, a portion must alwaysbe given to the priest, or magician, as he iscalled, even if he be not a member. In atime of scarcity, also, many of the people whohave been tattooed in this way unite as anabsolute troop of banditti, and share equallyamong each other a
