He goes onquite the opposite principle, and, true to realartistic feeling, tries to develop to the utmostthose characteristics which rightly belong tohim, instead of endeavoring to produce ef-fects which would not be consonant withtheir surroundings. The principle on which a Fijian coiffure isarranged is, that every hair is presumed togrow naturally at right angles to the skin,and to stand out stiffly and boldly. Sup-posing, then, that each hair could be inducedto follow its own course, without being en-tangled by others, it is evident that the wholehead of hair would form a large globularmass, surrounding the face. It is, therefore,the business of the Fijian hair-dresser toaccept this as the normal form of the hair,and to change or modify it as he thinks best. It is impossible to describe the variousmodes of Fijian hair-dressing better than hasbeen done by Mr. Williams, who resided inFiji for thirteen years.
