tribes ispresented by the inhabitants of anotherisland called Tanna, who are certainly in-ferior to those of Yate in stature and gen-eral appearance, and are thought to be so inpoint of intellect. They have a bad reputa-tion, being said to be treacherous and cruel.That they are also reputed to be cannibalsis no matter of wonder, inasmuch as theybelong to the Papuan race. They are saidto rival the Fans of Africa in one respect,and to dig up the bodies of the buried dead,in order to eat them. The island is volcanic, and the subterraneanfires seem to aid the already exuberant veg-etation of the tropics, which in Tanna at-tains a development that is almost incredi-ble. The inhabitants of Tanna are as black asthose of Yate, but seem to have no otherpoints of resemblance. The men appear tothink that they are not black enough bynature, for they have a way of daubing theirsable countenances with black lead, andpainting upon the black groundwork sundrypatterns in red ochre. Not contentwith killing the first missionary who set hisfoot on their shores, the people many yearsafterward murdered another missionary andhis wife. This second murder was owing tothe priests, who persuaded the people thatan epidemic which had done much damageamong the natives was caused by the mis-sionaries from a strange land. The ignorantpeople readily believed this statement, and,wild with the uncontrolled, fury of the sav-age, they murdered both the accused per-sons. The deed was scarcely done before-the people repented of it, and only the dayafter the murder, when the bodies wereburied, the natives stood round the graveoverwhelmed with grief, the most sinceremourner being the chief of the district.
