But the Tongan, who never thinks ofboasting before or after battle, whose wea-pons are simple and unadorned, is so com-pletely the superior of the Fijian that hecould, if he chose, make himself the masterof the whole Fiji territory. We see thesame characteristic in several Eastern lands,in which the men are walking arsenals ofweapons inlaid with gold, silver, and pre-cious stones, and yet will take the first op-portunity of running away when there isa probability that their ornamental weaponswill be used in earnest. So the experienced anthropologist, assoon as he sees these beautifully carvedarms, decorated with the most delicate plu-mage, and painted with all the colors whichnative art can supply, at once makes up hismind that such weapons are more for showthan use, and that the makers would nothave expended such time and troubleupon them, if they had intended them toundergo the rough usage of actual war-fare.
