The native then tookthe empty shell of a tortoise, and struck itseveral blows with an axe, by way of tellingthe cayman that its meal was ready. Theresult of the operation justified the Indianspromise. The cayman could not get at thebait without lifting itself well out of thewater, and securing it by a sudden snap;while the resistance offered by the stickcaused the projecting barbs to be driveninto the reptiles throat as it fell back intothe water. How the cayman was dragged out of thewater, and how Mr. Waterton jumped uponits shoulders, and disabled it by seizing itsfore-paws and twisting them on its back, ismatter of history.
