thin which a party of Sioux warriors hadhidden themselves, and were imitating theaction of the animals which they personated.Inveterate enemies of the Mandans, theyhad reconnoitred their village by night, andascertained that they were executing thebuffalo dance. Several of them procuredbison skins, and enacted the part of the ani-mals, while their comrades were concealedbehind the bluffs. Fortunately for the Mandans, their leaderbecame suspicious of the supposed bisons,and halted his troop before they had quitefallen into the trap, and, when some eightyor ninety mounted Sioux dashed at themfrom behind the bluff, they were just start-ing homeward. As it was, however, eightof them fell, a loss which was but ill com-pensated by one or two Sioux scalps securedby the Mandans in the hurry of flight. Evenunder such untoward circumstances, the buf-falo dance did not lose its reputation, forwithin two days a large herd of bisonspassed near the village, and afforded an abun-dant supply of meat.
