Text Appearing Before Image:
ich she regarded the child. Whenit dies, she swathes the body in many w^rap-pers, places it in her net-bul, or native w^allet. and carnes it about with her as if it werealive. She never parts with it for a mo-ment. When she eats she offers food to thedead corpse, as if it were still alive, andwhen she lies down to sleep, she lays herhead upon the wallet, which serves her as apillow. The progress of decay has no effectupon her, and though the body becomes sooffensive that no one can come near her,she seems unconscious of it, and neverdreams of abandoning the dreadful burden. In process of time nothing is left but themere bones, but even these are tended inthe same loving manner, and even after thelapse of years the mother has been knownto bear, in addition to her other bur-dens, the remains of her dead child. Evenwhen the child has been from six to sevenyears old she will treat it in the same man-ner, and, with this burden on her back, willcontinue to discharge her heavy domesticduties.
