(1113) STRENGTH AND ACTIVITY OF THE DYAKS. 1115 cloth; while on their heads they wear mag-nificent caps made of monkey-skin, anddecorated with the beautiful feathers of theArgus pheasant, two of the largest feathersbeing placed so that one droops over eachear. All these Dyaks have a very singularprofile, in consequence of their habit of tilingthe teeth and so reducing their bulk, thosewho have concave teeth presenting the mostcurious outline. Comparatively slight and feeble as theDyaks look by the side of the stalwart andmuscular European, their strength is reallywonderful, and enables them to perforintasks which the powerful white man couldnot by any possibility achieve.
