These were waved over him so as toact as fans. After the king was borne the great fetishaxe, followed by the band, a noisy assem-blage of performers on drums, rattles, trum-pets, cymbals, and similar instruments. Twospecimens of ivory trumpets, with variousstrange devices elaborately carved, are rep-resented in an engraving on the 558th page.The right-hand trumpet has a crucifiedfigure on it.
