It is scarcelypossible to imagine the depths of uglinessinto Avhich an Australian woman descendsafter she has passed the prime of her life.As we have seen, the old woman of Africais singularly hideous, but she is quite passa-ble when compared with her aged sister ofAustralia. The old Australian woman certainly doesnot possess the projecting jaws, the enor-mous mouth, and the sausage-like lips of theAfrican, but she exhibits a type of hideous-ness peculiarly her own. Iler face lookslike a piece of black parchment strainedtightly over a skull, and the mop-like, un-kempt hair adds a grotesque element to thefeatures which only makes them still morerepulsive. The breasts reach to the waist,flat, pendent, and swinging about at everymovement; her body is so shrunken thateach rib stands out boldly, the skin beingdrawn deeply in between them, and thelimbs shriv
