(48) THE KAFFIR PERFUME. 45 series of boxes and barrels full of objectsfrom Kaffirland. We took the precautionof opening the cases in the garden, and, evenin the open air, the task of emptying themwas almost too much for our unaccustomedsenses. All the objects were genuine speci-mens, not merely made for sale, as is sooften the case, but purchased from thewearers, and carefully put away. Theowner of the collection was rather humor-ous on the subject, congratulating us on ourpreparation for a visit to Kaffirland, andtelling us that, if either of us wished toform a good idea of the atmosphere whichprevailed in a Kaffir hut with plenty of com-pany, all we had to do was to get into theempty cask, sit at the bottom of it, and putthe lid on. Several of the articles of cloth-ing were transferred to my collection, butfor some time they could not be introducedinto the room. Even after repeated wash-ings, and hanging out in the garden, anddrenching with deodorizing fluid, they re-tained so much
