dby tearing the leaves to pieces and shower-ing the fragments on the heads of thebrothers. The travellers happened to be in thecountry just in time to see a curious mourn-ing ceremony. There was a tremendouscommotion in the chiefs tembe, and oninquiry it turned out that twins had beenborn to one of his wives, but that they wereboth dead. All the women belonging to hi3household marched about in procession,painted and adorned in a very grotesquemanner, singing and dancing with strangegesticulations of arms and legs, and looking,indeed, as if they had been indulging inpombe rather than afflicted by grief. Thiswent on all day, and in the evening theycollected a great bundle of bulrushes, tied itup in a cloth, and carried it to the door ofthe mothers hut, just as if it had been thedead body of a man. They then set it downon the ground, stuck a quantity of the rushesinto the earth, at each side of the door, kneltdown, and began a long shrieking wail, which lasted for several hours together.
