Vengeance for amurdered chief is intelligible, and so is awar for succession; but the last cause needssome explanation. By the laws of Samoa, a woman once awife is always a wife, even though she maybe put away by her husband. The Samoan.chiefs claim the right of marrying as manywives as they choose, and putting themaway as often as they like. Indeed, a manoften marries a girl merely for the sake ofher dower of mats and other property. Buteven after he has put away a wife, he stillconsiders her as his own chattel; and if anyother chief takes her to his house, war isat once declared against him. It is a curi-ous fact that the original husband caresnothing about the morality of the wifewhom he has put away, but only for the in-sult offered to himself by taking his prop-erty.
