xii CANADA : EASTWARD JOURNEY 407 About mid-day we pass the Great Divide, and twoor three hours later we reach Banff, a charming summerretreat, with sulphur baths and mineral waters for thosewho want them, at a height of 4500 feet above sea-level. Here the Duchess and part of the suite are toremain for two days, whilst the Duke is to go on ashooting expedition farther down the line. From thestation we drive to the Canadian National Park closeby, where there is a little herd of buffaloes, almost theonly remains of the countless herds which formerlyroamed over the prairies, supplying the Red Skinswith all the necessaries of life, but which were rapidlyexterminated by the advance of the agricultural settlersand the use of the repeating rifle. In the reserve wefind 9 bulls, 7 cows, and 14 young animals ; and thereis some hope of the race being preserved, for thenumbers have doubled in three years.
