xii CANADA: EASTWARD JOURNEY 409 and we are once more in a region of forest, lakes, andtarns. A great part of the day we are winding alongthe deeply indented, rocky northern shore of LakeSuperior, which we admired so much on our westwardjourney. The people are as keen as on the formeroccasion to get a glimpse of the Royal visitors, anddisplay great enthusiasm. Even at an hour when thevisitors must be supposed to have gone to bed, we hearoccasionally, as we pass a station, a burst of cheering. Thursday^ 10th October.—Early in the morning wereach North Bay on Lake Nipissing, a fine sheet ofwater forty miles long, connected by French Riverwith Lake Huron, and are transferred, withoutchanging carriages, from the Canadian Pacific Railwayto the Grand Trunk. Our course lies now due south,through the picturesque Muskoka Lake district, in thedirection of the western end of Lake Ontario.
