The post of the Miamis was onthe site of the present Fort Wayne, Indiana, from which the band of LaDemoiselle revolted in 1747, and built the village of Pickawillany, inwhat is now the state of Ohio; and the post of La Riviere Blanche (in1747) was probably the same as that of the White River (the Cuyahoga)at which Saguin had his trading post in 1742. The agreement reads asfollows: This day, tenth April, one thousand seven hundred and forty-seven,We, Josue Boisberthelot de Beaucours, Governor of Montreal, andHonore Michel de Villebois, Commissioner of the said place, in accord-ance with the instructions of the Marquis de Beauharnois, GovernorGeneral, and M. Hocquart, Intendant, have signed the present treatyand agreement with the Sieur Charly Saint-Ange, agreeing to carry ontrade at Miamis and Riviere Blanche posts on the following conditions,viz.: Clause One The Sieur Charly Saint-Ange, either personally or by his employes,

Ou o 9- Indian Trade and Pennsylvania Traders 323 shall exclusively carry on trade with the French or the Indians settledwithin the territory of the said posts, the whole according to the ordinarylimits and as M. de Saint-Pierre and the Sieur Charly, his brother, haveenjoyed possession thereof. ; Clause Two The said Lessee shall have the right to supply the said posts with thenumber of canoes and quantity of merchandise or goods he shall deemnecessary. In regard to the men to be employed, it is advisable, in orderthat the country shall not be unmanned, that he should, in war time,employ those only who are requisite, taking care to obtain from theGeneral in the usual way discharge for each canoe examined and signedby the Intendant, to which discharge shall be annexed the rolls of thesaid men who shall be accepted by the said General; the discharges androlls will then be registered as usual at the Registry office at Montreal.
