Captain Hentig passed a few yards beyond the scouts and called out to theIndians, to all of whom he was well known through his five years of service at CampApache, Ukashe, which means Go away. Captain Hentig and his orderly, who was between him and Lieutenant Carter,fell at the first volley, but the bodies of the wounded men were rescued by Lieuten-ant Carter and carried to the rear. The dismounted men of Troop D seized theirarms; the small headquarters guard, engaged in putting up a tent for Colonel Carr,advanced on the scouts with brave Sergeant Alonzo Bowman in the lead, and openedfire. At this time there were more than 100 Indians besides the scouts in camp, andless than forty dismounted men engaged in a hand-to-hand conflict. Colonel Carr walked calmly towards the position just vacated by the mutinousscouts and called firmly to the guard. Kill the Medicine Man !
