When Dwight was only four years of age hisfather suddenly died, lei^ing a family of seven chil-dren, the oldest but thirteen years of age, and with noproperty for their support, save a little house with anacre or two of land, and even this incumbered withdebt. The mother of this helpless family was not anordinary woman. Endowed with great force of char-acter and strength of both body and mind, she pickedup her burden of poverty and toil and struggled onas best she could, until her children, who had beenher anxiety and care, became her comfort and sup-port. By her frugality and good management, andby the enterprise of her sons, they have now a com-fortable property. Mr. Moody has built a house forhimself near the family homestead, which has becomehis retreat from the exhaustive labors of revival cam-paigns. His early education was exceedingly limited. Heused to keep a rattan in his desk, and my back tin-gles now as I think of it. But after awhile the notiongot abroad among the people that a school might begoverned by love, and the district was divided intowhat I might call the law party and the grace party;the law party standing by the old schoolmaster, withhis rattan, and the grace party wanting a teacher whocould get along without punishing so much. After awhile the grace party got the upper hand,turned out the old master, and hired a young lady totake his place.
